CLINICAL CASES

- IBD (INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE) - POMPOM – Cat, Male, Age: 7, Undetermined Breed -

Pompom, from 6 months before appearing in the 1st session of Acupuncture, had recurrent vomiting, had sometimes diarrhea and had loss of appetite.
Had had an ultrasound which noted that "the segments of ileum" - portion of the small intestine - "show a significant thickening of the muscle layer while maintaining the stratification and the normal motility", concluding that "the observed changes are consistent with inflammatory bowel disease" (IBD), "although we cannot exclude the presence of a neoplasia".
He was taking an anti-inflammatory Steroid, and the dose was decreased until it was totally removed after the 9th session of acupuncture. Simple Acupuncture was made of selected points in treatment sessions lasting about 20 minutes.
There was three weekly sessions, followed by 2 sessions with 2 biweekly frequency, after that 2 sessions were made with an interval of 3 weeks between them, two more treatments with an interval of 4 weeks between each other, followed by 2 sessions at a frequency biweekly, and 3 sessions with an interval of 3 weeks between them, followed by 1 session after 6 weeks, and 1 last session after 12 weeks.
In total 16 sessions were made at an interval of 12 months.

After the 2nd session of acupuncture, the cat did another ultrasound control in which it was confirmed that "segments of the ileum" - portion of the small intestine - "continue to show significant thickening of the muscular layer”.
About one and a half months after this ultrasound and after the 5th session, in the ultrasound monitoring it was found that "bowel segments have observed thinning of the muscular layer with respect to the previous ultrasound, however, it is considered thickened. Although there are significant improvements as regards the thickening of the muscular layer of the ileum, still remain the same differential diagnosis (inflammatory bowel disease, diffuse neoplasia).".
In ultrasound monitoring done after about two months, and after the 7th session, it was confirmed that "segments of the gastrointestinal tract have observed stratification and regular maintenance of motility. At this time the changes previously recorded at the level of the layers of the ileum are not observed.".
After 3 months another ultrasound was made, and after the 11th session, in which they confirmed that "segments of the gastrointestinal tract have regular maintenance of stratification and motility".
After the 2nd session of Acupuncture and until the end of treatment Pompom had never vomit again, had no diarrhea and had only two episodes of 1-2 days which he had not eaten or had little appetite, now being a 'normal' cat.
